My Sophomore year ends this Saturday. I’m officially done with my first round of clinical rotations. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in College yet. I remember every single one of my patients and I doubt I will ever forget them. They were all unique and amazing people.
I am not sure if I am working for a hospital this summer or not. I still have to go home and check out the local hospitals. If I do, I will continue to write this blog and update about what I am doing and all the things I am learning. If not, I probably won’t be posting as much. I will pick up and continue with my Junior year in August. I’ll be doing Clinical 2 days a week on a Med Surg floor!! (exciting!) And I will be entering my first Med/Surg class. (Hopefully it goes well).
I wish everyone the best of luck with finals! Study hard and remember summer is right around the corner. Thank you so much for all the support this past semester. It truly means a lot to me <3
I went into the OR last week in clinicals. In my surgery, the woman was getting a hysterectomy. (Note: I know nothing about the patient. We were not given any patient information this week, we were just randomly assigned to an operating room and told to watch).
The procedure only took about an hour and a half. It was a lot shorter than I had thought it would be. Also, something I found interesting was when they opened her up, she didn’t bleed a lot. I forgot to ask the surgeon why that was because I was in awe at the whole thing but if anyone knows and would like to inform me, send a message! I would love to know why that is.
During the procedure they cauterized a lot of fibers around the uterus that was keeping it attached. This was my first time experiencing cauterization. I had heard that it smelled horrible and that it made some people nauseous. Honestly to me it was like something was burning but not flesh. Like if you burnt popcorn or something lol. And the smell went away very fast. But after they removed the uterus and ovaries, they put it in a silver tray and the surgeon came over and told me I could hold it and mess around with it.
It was awesome! So squishy and really warm to the touch. (I’m guessing because it was just removed from a woman’s’ body). There were a few cysts on it. One was the size of a ping pong ball. They were apparently harmless but might have caused some pain. They were a little harder then the actual tissue itself but not too hard. The ovaries are also bigger than I thought they were. They are about 1 inch long. It was half the size of my thumb and the entire uterus was about half the size of my fist. (Tiny!!) For an organ that can cause so much grief to people, I was expecting it to be a little bit bigger lol.
After I held it I talked with the surgeon for a bit about hysterectomies and why woman chose to get them done. He told me a little bit about what other surgeries were like and how learning to perform surgeries was difficult but amazing. He told me I should consider being a scrub nurse since I was so excited to see the inside of a body. He said many students that come in generally either have to leave or they pass out. I was just so excited. (any Grey’s fans out there?!)
Yeah that was my experience. I’m slowly dying this week however. It’s finals and I feel so unprepared. I’ll be spending hours in the library. So good luck to any other students out there taking finals as well, we all need it!
Two Nurses are in the Cafeteria discussing the condition of one of the patients in their care. The two nurses are in a room filled with other patients, visitors and workers. What might these two nurses be charged with?
A) invasion of privacy
B) defamation of character
C) intentional negligence
D) unintentional negligence
I’m a little stuck on this one! Any help would be great! Thanks guys :)
I’m on spring break for a week and its actually nice to be doing nothing for once. I do have to eventually study for a Fundamentals of Nursing exam the week I get back. But as of right now I’m sleeping, eating, catching up on Grey’s Anatomy and just doing nothing really! :)
Hope everyone’s doing good. Enjoy your breaks when you get them!
Thank you so much everyone. I NEVER imagined that so many people would follow my blog. It truly means so much to me! Hope everyone is doing well with their studies and care plans! It’s midterm week for me so I’ve been living in the library for the past few days. I’ll post more after my week is over and my Spring Break starts! :)
I dreamed that I walked into Clinical but instead of getting a normal patient, my instructor told me that I was to be working on a very secret case. She led me to a very old part of the hospital that was behind a secret door. The door led up many stairs and eventually I reached the top floor which was covered by old wooden beds and nurses in early 1900 uniforms. There was no electricity, no modern medicine. Just these old nurses walking around this big room that looked like it belonged in a Victorian house. The beds were evenly spaced and nicely made and most of them were empty with a few exceptions. My instructor led me to one of the bedsides which held a very young girl who looked like she was sleeping. My instructor then told me we were working in pediatrics but with children who have been in comas since the 19th century and who have not aged. I was left alone with this brown haired, pale girl who was so peaceful looking. I had to help take care of her by changing her sheets, washing her up, giving her water, and just assisting in any care I could. Suddenly she woke up from her coma and looked at me. I was so stunned I ran to my instructor who had walked back into the normal hospital, but when I tried to walk down the stairs, the old time nurses stopped me and forced me to go back without saying a word. I went back to the girl who tried to speak to me but had difficulty. She was unable to walk due to the coma and she was very weak. Instead of caring for her in the old hospital I picked her up and moved her to a small closet and set up a bed for her so I could hide her. Then I snuck back to the normal hospital, stole supplies and brought them to her so I could care for her with modern medicine without the old time nurses stopping me. However, they discovered where I was in the night time and took the girl away and forced me back to the normal hospital and my instructor let me know that I had failed my assignment and my patient and made me leave clinical.
So weird!
Today the patient I was given refused care so instead I went around the floor and helped various others with whatever tasks they needed. I performed a few accu checks, administered some insulin, cleaned a patient, watched a dressing change be performed on a patient who had received a hysterectomy, drained a JP drain, watched an IV be hooked up, made some beds, took vitals and then practiced charting on the computer. My day was busy but not very interesting. I didn’t get to talk to many patients which is generally my favorite part of my day and I didn’t get to practice many of my new skills. Sorry this week was a little boring haha!
